Microsoft’s cloud-based productivity suite, Office 365, faced an outage earlier today which knocked the service offline for many across the globe. The service remained down for some for approximately four hours.
According to Microsoft, Office 365’s issues stemmed from a recent ‘networking update’, which caused user traffic from the internet to Microsoft 365 services to intermittently fail. The company solved the problem by rolling back the update to a previous build, although both Office 365 and Microsoft Teams were offline for quite some time.
Thankfully, the outage occurred at around 1am UK time, meaning many European users were unaware of the service being offline. That meant that it largely affected US, Australian and Asian companies, who were either beginning the work day or finishing it.
The outage comes at an awkward time for Microsoft, which just yesterday boasted about 20 million daily active users on Microsoft Teams. That further extends Microsoft’s dominance in the marketplace, with second place Slack revealing last month that it had around 12 million daily users.
