Gridlock to Growth: What threatens the UK’s next-gen data centres?

The UK Government is eager to get more data centres built, but how can we overcome the numerous constraints placed on the industry? Whether it’s grid capacity, planning approvals, local opposition, or bad press – there’s a whole host of issues the industry needs to battle against. In this panel, we’ll discuss exactly what are the biggest issues, and how we, as a collective industry, can help overcome them.

A year of Critical National Infrastructure status – what’s changed?

It’s been over a year since the UK Government designated data centres as Critical National Infrastructure, and yet still many in the industry are unsure what it entails. During this keynote, you’ll learn exactly what it means, including the expectations placed upon the industry, and why just because there are minimum requirements set centrally, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still aim to exceed them.

Power @ The Edge

In this session we’ll provide some clarity on the issues facing the data centre sector with regard to grid connections and long lead times, and some possible alternate power sources, ranging from gas, hydrogen, nuclear and other potential options that could be consider as a  temporary or permanent solution.

AC, DC or Delusion? Which voltage strategy actually makes sense for AI data centres

AI is changing the power profile of the data centre, but the industry still cannot agree on what the best path forward is. There are advocates for keeping everything on AC — a technology that has been the mainstay of the industry for quite a number of years — although some will argue it’s not always better the devil you know, and to really optimise data centres for AI we need to be looking at DC power. That can be a whole can of worms in itself though, with 400VDC and 800VDC both being options on the table. So, where should we be heading? This session will outline the potential scenarios where each could come into play.

Carrier QuantumLeap™ Brand Vertical Lockup Blue

Who will win the cooling wars and still retain public approval?

There’s been a battle brewing as to what is the best cooling technology when it comes to next-generation data centres, and while liquid cooling may be genuinely inevitable for many deployments, there’s a bigger battle brewing when it comes to public approval. As UK discourse sharpens around data centres’ water usage, what can the industry do to improve its image and ensure it works with local communities, rather than against them?

Does the UK’s planning blitz go far enough?

The UK Government has continuously promised big changes when it comes to planning, especially for data centres, but do the changes go far enough? Additionally, how do we as an industry respond to planning constraints – ensuring we de-risk the schedule, having secure financing in place and making strategic infrastructure more socially durable.

It’s Not Easy Being Green: Why communities are demanding proof, not promises, from data centres

It’s not rare to see new data centre developments promising to be green, but while some are able to prove their green credentials, others aren’t. That’s led to the industry facing backlash from communities across the UK, with at least some authorities, including Edinburgh Council, now exploring moratoriums on data centre development. So, how can we ensure that we’re being more responsible to the communities we’re developing data centres in and actually prove that the industry is trying to be responsible with its environmental impact. This session will give tips on how to better communicate with local communities, as well as how to prove you actually are as ‘green’ as you say you are.
