Telehouse has announced plans to expand its largest data centre, Telehouse South, increasing the site’s capacity to 7.7 MW across three floors of colocation space.
Telehouse South first opened in 2022, with the company promising to expand the data centre as demand in the area grows. While the first phase was completed in less than 12 months following the acquisition of the site from Thomson Reuters in 2021, it provided just 668 racks and 2MW of power on opening. That was initially set to expand by the end of 2023 to 4.7 MW, but now Telehouse wants to go further.
The company has contracted Skanska to complete the installation of two new floors of colocation space by June 2024. This will see the installation of new mechanical, electrical, and public health infrastructure, and see the data centre offer 7.7MW of colocation space across three floors.
It has committed £158 million to the expansion, some 70% of the budget Telehouse committed to the full buildout of the data centre back in 2022. That money will not just go towards the installation of new equipment for the expanded centre though, with existing plant areas also set to undergo a redesign, while redundant plans and equipment will be removed and recycled.
Telehouse has also committed to upgrading the facility’s security and its environmental credentials with new exterior cladding to improve the building’s insulation. There are also plans for new vehicle management systems, boundary fencing, CCTV upgrades and analytics, new security gatehouse and cycle storage, and new meeting rooms and breakout spaces.
Takayo Takamuro, Managing Director, Telehouse Europe, commented, “Situated at the heart of our iconic Docklands campus, Telehouse South has rapidly established itself as a critically important connectivity hub both for ourselves and our clients. The ongoing buildout and development of this state-of-the-art data centre underlines the high standards of security, sustainability and operational excellence that Telehouse is able to deliver to its data centre customers today.”
Dan Williams, Managing Director of Skanska, added, “We are excited to be working with Telehouse to deliver this project. It is something we are ideally suited for, as we are experienced in delivering a wide range of data centre fit outs” This contract will be the one of the largest fit outs, in terms of financial value, that Skanska UK has undertaken.”
