Digital Realty has entered into five power purchase agreements (PPA) to support its operations in Spain and France.
In Spain, the company has secured a solar deal consisting of three separate 12-year agreements, developed by Spanish solar developer BRUC and located in the provinces of Cadiz and Zaragoza.
Digital Realty has also signed two 15-year agreements for wind energy projects in France, developed by renewable energy project developer wpd. The projects leverage small wind farms in the regions of Bretagne and Hauts-de-France.
Together, these agreements are expected to generate approximately 347 GWh of renewable energy annually, sufficient to power around 200,000 households across Europe.
Schneider Electric supported the negotiation of the agreements, ensuring they met Digital Realty’s standards.
Aaron Binkley, Vice President of Sustainability at Digital Realty, said of the recent agreements: “The signing of these most recent deals in Spain and France is the result of the continued execution of Digital Realty’s sustainability strategy, designed to support the development of high-quality renewables and strengthen our renewable energy coverage. We’re committed to continuing to expand our renewable energy portfolio and making progress towards our global sustainability goals.”
Marc Garner, SVP, Secure Power Division, Schneider Electric, Europe, emphasised the importance of PPAs in the industry’s future: “Power purchase agreements such as these are integral to its future, helping energy-intensive industries to simultaneously reap the financial and sustainability benefits of green innovation.”
In 2020, Digital Realty joined the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), committing to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 68% and Scope 3 emissions by 24% by 2030. The company now operates over 120 data centres worldwide with 100% renewable electricity and has executed 15 renewable energy PPAs globally, generating about 2,200 GWh of renewable energy annually.
