Eaton eyes up potential for solid-state transformers in data centres

Eaton has finalised its purchase of Resilient Power Systems, with it looking to accelerate the deployment of compact, medium-voltage solid-state transformers.

Currently Resilient Power Systems provides its solid-state transformers to a variety of applications, including ultra-compact EV charging depots that connect directly to the existing distribution grid. Eaton sees further growth opportunities in markets like data centres and energy storage, however.

“Resilient’s innovative technology, offering high density electrical power in a smaller footprint than comparable solutions, will support our customers’ need to lower costs, improve power reliability and increase efficiency,” said Heath Monesmith, President and Chief Operating Officer, Electrical Sector at Eaton.

“As we accelerate our strategy by investing for growth in new, innovative solutions, we welcome the Resilient team to Eaton and are excited for the opportunity to scale this next-generation medium voltage solid-state transformer technology for growing global markets like data centre and energy storage.”

Resilient Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer Tom Keister noted, “We are excited to join Eaton, and believe our combined teams, capabilities and leading technology will support our continued growth in new products and markets, including data centres. Our ultra compact solid-state transformers can improve energy efficiency, time to market for projects, and support a reliable grid.”

What is a solid-state transformer?

Solid-state transformers promise higher efficiency and greater controllability than conventional transformers, with the added benefit of reducing space and, potentially, installation time. For operators of data centres and large-scale energy storage, those gains translate into more capacity per rack or per site and improved economics. For EV charging, direct connection to distribution networks can simplify roll-outs and help meet surging demand.
