Sembcorp Energy UK plans 280 MW data centre at Wilton International, Teesside

Sembcorp Energy UK has announced plans for the first phase of a new data centre development at its Wilton International site in Teesside, which could deliver up to 280 MW of capacity.

The project is being brought forward through a joint development agreement with Digital Reef, a data centre and digital infrastructure specialist. A planning application has now been submitted for the initial phase of the scheme.

If approved, the facility will be designed to support high-performance computing, artificial intelligence and machine learning workloads – all areas placing increasing pressure on the UK’s digital and energy infrastructure.

Mike Patrick, CEO of Sembcorp Energy UK, noted, “Wilton International offers data centre operators a unique combination of large-scale power availability, established infrastructure and strong connectivity, enabling faster and more efficient deployment at scale.

“As one of Teesside’s leading industrial sites, it is also well-positioned to meet the UK’s digital infrastructure needs while driving investment, strengthening industry and creating sustainable, high-value jobs in the region.”

The announcement comes as the UK continues to grapple with how to support the growth of AI and digital infrastructure without overwhelming an already-constrained electricity system. That’s why the UK Government has placed increased emphasis on siting data centres where there is an abundance of power availability, with the site at Wilton International providing exactly that.

Piers Slater, Chief Executive of Digital Reef, explained, “From our first engagement with Sembcorp Energy UK, we recognised strong potential within the Wilton International site. Its existing large grid connection, behind the meter power assets, utilities and infrastructure and connectivity make it an attractive proposition and enable a fast and agile route to market.

“We look forward to working with Sembcorp Energy UK on this significant development.”

Subject to planning and other approvals, Sembcorp Energy UK expects construction of the Wilton International Data Centre to be able to begin later this year.
