Global Switch has secured a new long-term renewable electricity agreement with Drax Energy Solutions.
The 10-year Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA), which begins in January 2027, will see Drax act as an intermediary between the renewable generator and Global Switch, and is expected to provide 55 GWh of baseload solar power each year.
According to Global Switch, the agreement is expected to account for around 30% of its total UK electricity demand. It is also the second renewable power agreement Drax has supported for the company, with the two CPPAs now covering more than 70% of Global Switch’s UK electricity use.
Data centres are increasingly turning to PPAs, with the use of such agreements having soared in recent years. That’s being driven by soaring AI energy demands, volatile wholesale prices, and strict net zero targets. Global Switch itself already has an existing CPPA with Drax, while it also signed a PPA with RWE back in January for its London Docklands campus.
Gavin Greer, Group Procurement Director at Global Switch, noted, “At Global Switch, we have both a responsibility and a unique opportunity to facilitate a sustainable, technology-enabled world.
“Partnering with Drax on our Corporate Power Purchase Agreements has enabled us to secure reliable, renewable energy at predictable costs. This gives us the confidence and resilience to navigate energy market volatility and focus on delivering high-performance.”
Callum O’Reilly, CPPA Strategic Originator at Drax Energy Solutions, added, “Businesses are continuing to look for ways to manage energy market volatility while supporting their sustainability goals. For energy-intensive sectors such as data centres, long-term agreements like CPPAs can provide greater certainty over costs and supply. We’re pleased to continue supporting Global Switch as part of its wider energy strategy.”
