The most resilient data centre may be the one you already have

For many organisations, the data centre has become a critical dependency, but the prospect of making changes can still strike fear into the hearts of seasoned professionals. IT infrastructure now supports everything from communications, security systems and building management to cloud access, operational technology, customer services and emerging AI workloads. Many organisations consider it critical to retain these workloads locally, given that the actions or errors of an outside party may be enough to disrupt a service.

Even when organisations decide to make changes, their practical ability to expand or replace that infrastructure is often limited by space, budget, planning restrictions or the realities of working in a live operational environment.

This creates a difficult position for data centre and IT managers. They know downtime is unacceptable, but they may not have the option of building a new facility or moving into a purpose-built space. In sectors such as healthcare, education, local government, manufacturing, telecommunications and professional services, the question is often not whether a new data centre would be desirable, but whether it is realistic. For many, it therefore becomes a question of whether resilience can be improved within the estate and constraints that already exist.

It can, but doing so requires a pragmatic view of resilience. A resilient data centre is not simply a new data centre. It is an environment where the risks are understood, the most vulnerable points have been addressed and the infrastructure is properly maintained, monitored and documented throughout its life. In constrained environments, that operational discipline matters just as much as the physical design.

Start by understanding what you have

The starting point should always be a clear assessment of the existing environment. Many data centres, computer rooms and IT spaces have evolved over time as new workloads, cabinets, cooling units, UPS systems and cabling have been added. Each change may have solved an immediate problem, but the overall result can be an environment that is harder to manage than anyone intended. Power distribution may no longer reflect the current IT load, airflow may be compromised, rack density may have increased beyond the original cooling design and documentation may not have kept pace with reality.

Before specifying new equipment, organisations need to understand where the true resilience risks sit. That means looking at power, cooling, fire detection and suppression, physical security, environmental monitoring, access control, network routing and maintenance records together, rather than in isolation. A cooling issue, for example, may not be caused by the cooling system alone. It may be the result of poor airflow, blocked vents, unmanaged cabling, changed rack layouts or environmental settings that have been adjusted over time without being reviewed.

Some changes can be made quickly

In some cases, meaningful improvements can be made quickly. Reviewing environmental management settings, improving hot and cold air separation, replacing aging cooling units, cleaning filters, removing obstructions and consolidating underused equipment can all reduce risk without requiring major construction. These may not be high-profile changes, but they can make the difference between a fragile environment and one that has been brought back under control.

Plan upgrades in phases and across the lifecycle

Where more significant investment is needed, phased upgrades can provide a realistic route forward. Rather than waiting for approval for a large capital project, organisations can plan a sequence of improvements that strengthens resilience over time. This might involve upgrading UPS capacity, improving cooling efficiency, introducing better containment, replacing obsolete fire systems, improving monitoring or reworking electrical distribution. The key is that each phase should form part of a coherent long-term plan, rather than becoming another tactical fix.

This is where lifecycle planning becomes essential. Data centre infrastructure should not be treated as a one-off project that is completed and then left alone until something fails. Core systems such as UPS, cooling, fire suppression and switchgear all have service lives, maintenance requirements and replacement cycles. Organisations that understand those timelines are in a far stronger position to plan investment, avoid emergency spending and reduce the likelihood of unexpected outages.

Think outside the data centre room

For some sites, the existing room may simply no longer be the right answer. It may be too small, poorly located, difficult to secure or unable to support the additional power and cooling required. Where a traditional new-build facility is not realistic, modular data centres may provide a practical middle ground. A modular or containerised facility can be designed around a specific requirement, manufactured off-site, factory-tested and installed with less disruption than some conventional construction projects.

This approach may be particularly relevant where time, location or site conditions are challenging. Power, cooling, fire protection, security, access control and monitoring can be integrated into the design from the outset, giving the organisation a controlled data centre environment without necessarily committing to a larger building project. However, modular infrastructure should not be viewed as a shortcut. Site access, utilities, future expansion, maintainability, environmental exposure and security all need to be considered carefully if the facility is to deliver long-term resilience rather than short-term capacity.

Micro data centres are also becoming more relevant for organisations that need secure and resilient infrastructure but cannot dedicate a full room or building to IT. Modern compute and storage densities allow a substantial amount of IT capability to be housed within a cabinet-based environment, supported by integrated cooling, UPS, monitoring, fire suppression and physical security.

This can be particularly useful at the edge of the network, on manufacturing sites, in healthcare buildings, on campuses, in remote locations or in offices where local processing or redundancy is required. A micro data centre can support building systems, CCTV, IoT, operational applications or essential services that need to continue even if wider connectivity is disrupted. The word “micro” should not imply a lower standard. These environments still require the same careful consideration of power, cooling, location, noise, access and maintenance as any larger data centre.

Resilience isn’t just about design

Resilience does not end when the installation is complete. One of the most common weaknesses in constrained environments is not the absence of technology, but the absence of operational readiness. Accurate documentation, current asset records, cable schedules, maintenance logs, escalation procedures and recovery plans are all essential. During an incident, uncertainty wastes time. Teams need to know what is installed, how it is connected, who is responsible and what action should be taken.

Maintenance is equally important. Filters need cleaning, batteries need testing, cooling systems need servicing and alarms need to be reviewed. Environmental data from sensors and monitoring systems should be used proactively, not simply checked after a problem has occurred. If temperature, humidity or power usage trends are changing, the data centre team should understand why before those changes become failures.

For organisations that cannot afford downtime, resilience must become an ongoing discipline. It is designed into the physical environment, but it is sustained through maintenance, documentation, monitoring and regular review. A new-build data centre may be unrealistic for many organisations, but inaction is not the only alternative.

Making existing infrastructure more resilient

With a clear assessment of risk, phased investment, modular or micro data centre options where appropriate, and a stronger focus on operational readiness, organisations can improve the resilience of existing infrastructure. The practical challenge is not always to build something new. Often, it is to make what already exists, or what can realistically be deployed, fit for the critical role it now plays.
