Volta Data Centres has appointed Jason Liggins as its new CEO following the company’s separation from Verne and acquisition by Arcus Infrastructure Partners.
Liggins will be responsible for growing Volta’s presence in London while pursuing the acquisition of additional data centre sites, as the company looks to expand beyond its existing central London facility.
“My focus will be on leading the growth of the Volta business, strengthening our position in the London market, and expanding the platform through the acquisition of additional sites as we build Volta into a multi-site operator. I’m looking forward to driving this next phase of growth in close collaboration with Arcus,” Liggins said in a statement on LinkedIn.
Liggins joins Volta after previously serving as CEO of Crown Hosting, the Government-focused hosting joint venture between Ark Data Centres and the UK Government.
He led Crown Hosting for two years, although his career with Ark stretched back to 2014. That experience will likely prove useful as Volta looks to strengthen its position in an increasingly competitive London data centre market.
Building a multi-site data centre operator
Volta currently operates a 6 MW carrier-neutral colocation and interconnection facility in central London, offering 91,000 sq ft of space across the site.
The facility serves customers across the financial services, telecommunications, IT and enterprise sectors, while providing access to more than 40 carriers.
Volta has operated the site since 2013, although the building’s history stretches back much further. It was originally used as a Reuters facility during the 1980s before being refurbished and converted into a modern colocation data centre.
While Volta has so far operated from a single location, Liggins’ appointment signals the company’s ambition to expand its platform through further acquisitions.
That could enable the operator to broaden its geographic reach and offer customers access to additional facilities, rather than relying solely on its existing central London site.
Volta enters another new chapter
The appointment comes after several changes to Volta’s ownership structure in recent years.
The company was acquired by infrastructure investor Digital 9 Infrastructure in 2022 and subsequently merged with European colocation provider Verne.
The combined business was then sold to investment firm Ardian in 2024 as Digital 9 began winding down its portfolio. Volta was later separated from Verne and acquired by Arcus Infrastructure Partners earlier this year.
With the ownership transition now complete, Arcus appears keen to turn Volta into a broader data centre platform. Liggins will now be tasked with identifying potential acquisitions and ensuring the company can grow without losing its existing foothold in the central London colocation market.
