At DCR Live 2026, we caught up with Paul Willoughby from EnerSys to discuss how data centre operators can balance rapid growth with the need to build more sustainably and efficiently.
During the conversation, Paul explored the impact of AI and high-performance computing on critical power infrastructure, including the challenges that increasingly variable and spiky workloads can create for batteries. He highlighted the importance of correctly sizing battery systems and selecting the right technology to support changing load profiles.
Paul also discussed the need for the industry to take a longer-term view of investment, looking beyond upfront costs and considering total cost of ownership when upgrading existing facilities. From repurposing industrial sites with existing power capacity to treating batteries as a potential asset, he argued that operators need to plan for future growth rather than simply focusing on day-one costs.
The conversation also touched on the importance of educating the public about the role data centres play in everyday life, as well as the need for operators to prioritise carbon reduction and energy efficiency if the sector is to grow while addressing the criticism it faces.
