UK Power Networks has signed up as a strategic partner of the Data Centre Alliance (DCA), becoming the first distribution network operator to do so.
The move by UK Power Networks is framed as a practical step to help developers and operators connect new facilities to the electricity grid more quickly and with greater flexibility, supporting the UK’s ambitions in AI, cloud and high-performance computing.
As part of the tie-up, UK Power Networks has published a newly developed Introduction to Connections guide on the DCA member portal. The resource explains the available connection pathways and aims to help projects proceed efficiently and safely, with options that can align capacity to evolving demand over a project’s life.
UK Power Networks is positioning a set of connection routes that it says can be matched to different build schedules and load profiles:
- Non-curtailable/unconstrained connections: standard firm capacity with 24/7 supply.
- Ramped connections: capacity that increases over time to support phased growth and manage costs.
- Flexible connections: non-firm connections managed in real time to enable earlier access ahead of reinforcement.
- Profiled connections: tailored capacity profiles to mirror predictable, variable loads, potentially streamlining access before network upgrades.
Developers can also use the company’s Open Data Portal to view network equipment, capacity and utilisation, intended to support better siting decisions and “right-sizing” of connections. Pre-application support, “Ask the Expert” surgeries, and access to technical documentation and industry events are being promoted as additional routes to guidance.
Neil Madgwick, Head of Connections Delivery at UK Power Networks, noted, “We’re proud to be the UK’s first electricity distributor to join the Data Centre Alliance as a strategic partner. This collaboration marks a major step forward in helping data centres connect to the grid quickly, efficiently and flexibly.
“Our new ‘Introduction to Connections’ guide and range of innovative connection solutions are designed to give developers and operators the clarity and support they need to deliver projects that meet the evolving demands of the sector. We’re committed to working closely with our customers and partners to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of digital infrastructure and innovation.”
Steve Hone, Chief Executive of the Data Centre Alliance, added, “This partnership shows how closer collaboration between the data centre sector and electricity distributors can accelerate the UK’s digital and net zero ambitions. By sharing knowledge and practical guidance, we’re helping developers make informed, sustainable decisions and strengthen the skills base our industry depends on.”
